This is 2010. I am working on developing a religious e-library for myself. Till today, I have collected about 27,000 books on religion that contain a variety of tomes written by Muslim and Non-Muslim scholars on various aspects of religion. The library is growing at an amazing speed. Its size as on today is 70GB.
Had I bought these books from the market, I would have spent money above $100,000. Such books would require a big warehouse to be placed in racks but they are available in a tiny hard disk not longer than 3 inches.
In order to keep a backup of this library, I purchased a hard disk of 1 Terabyte (TB) which is equivalent to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Information technology is growing in leaps and bounds. Hopefully, this hard disk will fall short in next 4-5 years and I might be buying another backup disk of 100TB at that time.
Hard disks were invented in the 1950s. They started as large disks up to 20 inches in diameter holding just a few megabytes. Modern hard disks are a different kettle of fish.
A typical HDD design consists of a spindle that holds one or more flat circular disks called platters, onto which the data are recorded. Data is stored on the surface of a platter in sectors and tracks. Tracks are concentric circles, and sectors are pie-shaped wedges on a track. The platters are made from a non-magnetic material, usually aluminum alloy or glass, and are coated with a thin layer of magnetic material, typically 10–20 nanometers in thickness. You can imagine that a standard copy paper is 0.07–0.18 millimeters (70,000–180,000 nanometers) thick. (Source: www.wikipedia.com and www.howstuffworks.com )
This hard disk reminds me the magnificent power of God Who has given small particles of silicon or aluminum the ability to store huge information. Man has done nothing except to invent the method of utilizing this capacity.
It indicates that our virtues and vices are being recorded. We should be aware of the fact that we will be held responsible for our deeds.
When the earth will be shaken to her utmost convulsion and the earth will throw up her burdens (from within) and man will shout (distressed): “What is the matter with her?” On that Day she will declare her tidings. For that your Lord will have given her inspiration.
On that Day, men will proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done). Then shall anyone who has done an atom’s weight of good, see it. And anyone who has done an atom’s weight of evil, shall see it. (Quran 99: 1-8)
